This
is a good example that you can't always judge things on how the packaging
looks. I would never have guessed that this almost 55 minute long demo would
be this good. The quartet began in 2003 by playing thrash metal in the vein
of Slayer and Sodom. I still hear a lot of this in the music,
but the Italians nowadays play technical death metal of a high calibre.
The songs are detailed and the band is good at putting both life and
expression in the music. The tracks are all rich on everything from melody
to downright brutality and it sure doesn't hurt either that unit regularly
add a lead or two and occasionally a bit of acoustic guitar. The music bears
quite a few references to Slayer and thrash metal as a whole. This
can clearly be heard in both "The Cannibal of Milwaukee" and "In the Name of
God". This mixture is of course anything but original, still it helps
distance Death Heaven to a degree and provide them with a bit of
identity. An almost 55 minute long demo is most ambitious, but Death
Heaven pull this off in the most satisfying way. The only downside I can
think of is that many of the songs tend to be too long.
The demo was produced by the guitarist Andrea Petucco and the result is
quite convincing. Still it would be interesting to hear how tracks like "The
Cannibal of Milwaukee" or "Sunday of War" would sound if they got a trim and
a professional production. I can only encourage the band to continue as
heard on the demo as they certainly have something interesting going on.
